A data centre is a dedicated space where many computer systems and hardware are housed. This includes computing infrastructure that IT systems require, such as servers, data storage drives and network equipment. Due to the sheer amount of hardware within data centres, there is always the risk of a fire occurring. To mitigate this, measures such as air conditioning units are put in place, but should a fire break out, it needs to be dealt with property. This is where we at Fire Protection Services (FPS) come in. In this blog post, we will be detailing the best way to respond to a fire in a data centre.
As a result of data centres being made up of vast amounts of electrical equipment, CO2 fire extinguishers should be used to combat a fire, should one occur. This is because CO2 extinguishers work by discharging carbon dioxide gas which deprives the fire of oxygen, meaning that it has no fuel. This results in the fire not being able to spread any further which will lead to it burning out. Consequently, the electrical equipment within the data centres that were not reached by the fire will remain intact as they were not doused in water or foam as would have been the case if a water or foam fire extinguisher was used.
We hope that you found this blog post interesting and informative. Should you manage a data centre and wish to invest in some CO2 extinguishers then please do not hesitate to contact us today at Fire Protection Services. One of our fantastic team members will then get back to you as soon as possible. We look forward to speaking with and hopefully being of service to you.
